Trip overview
This is a fabulous little-known trekking destination to the two villages of Naar (4110m), and Phu (4080m). Both Naar and Phu are above the tree line, or at the upper limits of cultivation. It is close to the Manang district and linked by crossing the rugged and challenging Kang La pass (5306m). The Naar-Phu trek provides amazing views of the Annapurna range from the Kang La but it is the wild, and arid valley of Phu that is a stunning place so evocative of Tibet. The trail climbs to Meta from Koto on the Annapurna Circuit route and then climbs steadily through Kyang to Phu. There are around 300, mostly Buddhist inhabitants in the villages who earn their living by farming, and yak herding. Phu is the main gateway for climbing expeditions to Kanguru Himal, Himlung, Ratnachuli, Gachikang, and other peaks. Apart from the odd researchers, and climbing expeditions, few foreigners have visited the area, and the tourism infrastructure is basic. The route returns back to Naar Phedi, and Naar, from Phu before the Kang La pass to Manang.
